Bodhi reflected one day over tea: “Our lives are obsessed with a sense of doership. ‘I did this but it didn’t come out right or I did that and somehow it didn’t click, or I did it, I got it right and I am so happy.’ These are kind of the emotional expressions of our doings. ‘I’ as our illusion of a separate doer, feels the need to ‘do’ so that we establish our self over all others to say, ‘I am important, I am very important. I am very very important. And I can prove it, because I have to do, I have so many things to do.’”
In these troubled times we all want to do something positive for the world, to set things right again, but Bodhi so accurately reminds us we may want to help the environment but if we don’t have the right inner environment and intent, nothing happens. It is all tied up in our sense of doership. As Bodhi says, “If I don’t have that inner sense of Love then I cannot contribute, because Love cannot be my doing, my knowledge cannot be my doing, my wisdom cannot be about my doing, it all Flows out of my sense of Being, of Happening, not doing. People are so obsessed with doing that they cannot remain for a second without doing. Can you stay still without doing? Can you be happy without doing? Can you remain with yourself when you have nothing to do and just fill yourself up, moment to moment, with pure joy and blissfulness?”
It is very hard for us to ‘not do’ and ‘just Be.’ Pausing to take a few minutes with our Self can be scary. We are not sure what we will find out about ourselves. There is so much fear in the air today, we can almost feel it palpably even if we just sit and let our mind go to our unfettered thoughts and emotions. As we pause, we notice the internal conflict between the different voices in our heads and the different feelings in our heart and guts and this can be quite unsettling.
Bodhi is never fearful, for Bodhi never worries about ‘doing’ or outcomes. He is the ‘Essence of Being’, he is always serene and calm; he can be concerned but never scared. He is always in Grace and never has any internal conflict. He has totally surrendered any sense of doership to the ONE Who Is the Ultimate Doer of all things! His trust in the Divine and the Good is infinite. And yet immense good is Done in the world through his humble acceptance of Being an instrument of the Divine. He Flows through life, knowing he is ever Guided, Protected, Loved and Accepted. When you are in his Essence, no matter what happens, you know the outcome will be for the greater Good.
It can be hard to keep this sense of calmness and wellness, but try we must. Getting out of the rut of ‘doership’ and into the realm of Pure Being, one person at a time, is the greatest gift we can give to the world today. There is enough chatter, news, opinions and divisiveness. It is only when we sit quietly and search the Pure Being within that our Joy and contentment can overflow to all others. Wanting to do something to fix the chaos is understandable, but sometimes the best way is to just BE!! And we have a wonderful model of Being in Bodhi! With Love eternal and gratitude to Bodhi for Teaching us through his words, but even more profoundly through his actionless Action!
